Spring 2004
Principal contractors Sir Robert McAlpine have been appointed together with Quantity Surveyors W.T.Partnership and Structural Engineers Whitby Bird & Partners to construct a new office building designed by Architects Rolfe Judd for the client Coal Pensions Properties Limited.

The building is adjacent to St Paul’s Cathedral and is therefore restricted both by St Paul’s heights and depths restrictions and has elevations facing St Paul’s Churchyard, Godliman Street, Deans Court and Carter Lane. The completed building will provide approximately 16,000 square metres of office and retail accommodation.

The buildings original façades have been retained up to third floor level to St Paul’s Churchyard, Godliman Street and part of the Deans Court elevation. Levels four and five were removed due to the advanced corrosion of the structural steel frame and its resultant adverse affect on the stonework. The stonework from these levels has been retained for partial reuse within the new scheme. The rear façade to Carter Lane has been completely removed.

Szerelmey have been contracted to design, procure and install Portland stonework to fourth, fifth and six floors to the retained facades combining where possible stonework previously salvaged from the original construction. The retained sections of the facades are being sympathetically cleaned and restored. Szerelmey’s works package also incorporates the reconstruction of the Carter Lane elevation to the rear of the building where new facing brickwork with stonework dressings are being provided.
