Materials, Sample Selection and Testing

The main attraction of natural stone is the wide variety of colours and textures available to the architect and client. However, such a wide range can also present a complex maze of choice issues. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Durability
  • Size of units required
  • Availability
  • Strength
  • Cost
  • Colour
  • Texture

It is unwise to select stone from a sample. Colour can vary in a natural material within the quarry. Stone can also alter quite markedly between wet and dry. With modern factory techniques, the same stone can be supplied with a large variety of finishes; honed, flamed, polished, sandblasted, brushed or tumbled.

With the use of the Internet, the number of materials available from all over the world has dramatically increased. However, when selecting a stone, it is important to have the corresponding test data available for the intended use. If this test data is not available, the cost of testing the material can be high.

The best advice for the successful use of stone remains to involve reputable Stone Consultants or Stone Contractors right from inception through to design and installation.

At Szerelmey, we pride ourselves on our ability to guide our clients confidently through these processes regardless of the size and scale of each unique project.
